A community for innovation and collaboration

Sandvík is more than a place to work. It is a collaborative hub where entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, companies and organizations come together to exchange knowledge, develop partnerships and explore new opportunities.

At the heart of Sandvík is a structured and regularly scheduled program of lectures, seminars, workshops and networking events. The program brings together experts, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors and policymakers for knowledge sharing, research collaboration, investor meetings and discussions on innovation, business development and public policy. Through these activities, Sandvík fosters meaningful connections and helps turn promising ideas and innovations into successful businesses.

As part of Arctell’s wider platform, Sandvík connects Iceland’s entrepreneurial and scientific communities with international expertise, partnerships and networks, bringing global perspectives and opportunities into its ongoing program of activities.

Built on entrepreneurial experience. Rooted in the High North.

Arctell Sandvík was inaugurated on October 7, 2026, by Guðmundur Fertram Sigurjónsson, his wife Fanney Kr. Hermannsdóttir and their partners.

Guðmundur Fertram Sigurjónsson is the founder of Kerecis and originated the idea of using fish skin for wound care and tissue repair, which became the foundation of the company. Working alongside a talented team, he developed the technology and led Kerecis from a small startup in Ísafjörður, in Iceland’s Westfjords, into a global medical technology company. The story of Kerecis demonstrates how innovation originating in a small community in the High North can become the foundation of a world-class company. In 2023, Danish medical technology company Coloplast acquired Kerecis for USD 1.3 billion – creating Iceland’s first Unicorn. Fertram’s experience extends well beyond Kerecis. He is an engineer, entrepreneur and investor with more than three decades of experience in innovation, technology development, and the founding and growth of companies across medical technology, biotechnology, financial technology and renewable energy. He has founded and co-founded companies in Denmark, Southeast Asia and Iceland and, throughout his career as an entrepreneur, engineer and business leader, has invented, developed and commercialized numerous products and technologies. He is a named inventor on hundreds of patents and patent applications.

The Kerecis story demonstrates how scientific discovery, local expertise, entrepreneurial ambition and international partnerships can transform an innovation originating in a small High North community into a globally competitive business.

This experience is central to Arctell’s ambition to build the next generation of High North companies.

Connected across borders

Arctell is a High North innovation and investment platform dedicated to building globally competitive companies rooted in science, entrepreneurship and regional expertise.

Arctell Sandvík in Reykjavík and Arctell Stockholmsgade in Copenhagen form a connected Nordic platform where entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, companies and international organizations can work, meet and collaborate across borders.

Additional Innovation & Knowledge Hubs are planned for Ísafjörður, Nuuk in Greenland and other strategic locations across the High North.

Through these hubs and its international relationships, Arctell seeks to connect founders, communities, scientific expertise and long-term capital, creating opportunities for innovation, venture building and international business development.

A place with a history of innovation

The name Sandvík is rooted in the history of Reykjavík’s Vesturbær district. The area now occupied by Melar and Hagar was once home to a farmstead called Sandvík, later renamed Hagi. Sandvíkurvegur, a road running through the area, retained its name until the middle of the 20th century.

Sandvík and Hagi were historically associated with several of Iceland’s prominent entrepreneurs. Among them was Magnús Th. S. Blöndahl (1861–1932), a pioneer in construction, industrial manufacturing and fisheries around the country, including Iceland’s Westfjords. He played a significant role in establishing and developing Völundur, a woodworking factory that became one of the most important enterprises in Iceland’s industrialization.

Magnús acquired Hagi around 1920. In 1924, he began developing a large-scale fish-processing facility on the property, including a technologically advanced fish-drying building and outdoor drying grounds. The operation became one of the largest of its kind in Iceland, employing approximately 100 people at Hagi in 1930.

The name Arctell Sandvík therefore reflects a place with a history of entrepreneurship, technological innovation and industrial development in Iceland. Today, that pioneering spirit finds a new purpose: creating an environment for people who aspire to build the companies and industries of the future.
